The Supermileage® competition provides engineering and technology students with a challenging design project that involves the development and construction of a single-person, fuel-efficient vehicle. Increasing fuel economy in the vehicles we use to power the world's transportation system is of vital importance for future generations. Without question, the global oil supplies will be depleted - most lik ely within the next 20 years. It is true that we have significant petroleum reserves in the form of oil shale and tar sands, and even coal can be converted to a liquid fuel if need be. BUT, we also know that ALL of these forms of energy pose potentially catastrophic damage to our environment. Alternative fuels such as wind, solar, tidal, biomass and even nuclear energy promise much less environmental im pact than their counterparts. But none of these are capable of displacing the quantity of energy that is consumed currently. In order to replace the oil that we currently consume with clean, renewable energy, it is essential that we increase the fuel economy of our vehicles. The SuperMileage Project is founded on these ideas. Students will engage with the Design and Construction of a highly fuel efficient, single passenger vehicle. The goal is to exceed 1000 mpg.
