Irony PDF Print E-mail

This is something that we thought was interesting: If you look through the chassis of the stripped motorcycle, you notice the bicycles retrofitted with electric motors.  If you can make the connection from transportation via conventional bicycles to electric bicycles, then this photo seems ironic because we are retrofitting a motorcycle with an electric setup.  The irony is that we are creating a product (electric vehicle) that may one day have an influence in the way we commute daily.

The bike is being donated by Dr. Rob Prins, it is a 1968 Sears 124.

1968 Sears fall catalog motorcycle lineup: the 124 is in the top right corner

That's right, in 1968 you could order a street legal motorcycle right out of the Sears catalog.  Sears imported them from Italy where they were manufactured by Gilera (now part of Piaggio).

A team of students from the electric bicycle project has proposed to convert a small motorcycle to electric power.  The team will participate in land speed racing at East Coast Timing Association (ECTA) events and use the vehicle in outreach events.  In addition to community based outreach, the team hopes to promote use of electric vehicles in motorsports events.  It is our assertion that the motorsports community can make a significant contribution to the promotion and development necessary to mainstream acceptance of electric vehicles.
